Fungal Diversity - Special Issue: Fungal Species Numbers

Fungal Diversity will publish a Special Issue dedicated to fungal species numbers.

Fungi represent one of the most diverse groups of organisms on the planet, with an essential role in ecosystem processes and functioning. In the last ten years, new DNA sequencing technologies have revolutionized studies of fungal taxonomy and diversity, leading to changes in the estimates of fungal species numbers from 1.5 to 2.2 to 3.8 and 11.7 to 13.2 million species, based on host association and high-throughput sequencing. However, only around 150,000 fungal species have been described to date, and it is believed that these organisms encompass a much higher diversity. Given the essential importance of fungi for ecosystem functioning, it is necessary to investigate fungal diversity using the most diverse methods and empirical demonstrations of the fungal diversity in the world to address their roles in the different ecosystems. Fungal Diversity is pleased to invite submissions to this Special Issue, which welcomes the submission of research and reviews papers with outstanding contributions to taxonomy, diversity, and evolution, focusing on the species numbers. All papers must be submitted by October 31, 2021.

All manuscripts (original research or reviews) will be peer-reviewed, and accepted papers will be published online (as soon as they are accepted).
