Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems - Call for Papers: Special Issue “Managing organic resources in agriculture: opportunities and challenges (RAMIRAN 2025)”

This Special Issue in Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems invites contributions on the management of organic residues and manures in agriculture, presented at the 19th RAMIRAN conference in Wageningen (15-17 October 2025). All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by 2-3 independent reviewers and handled by the Guest Editors, in collaboration with the Journal’s Editors-in-Chief. Papers accepted for publication in the Special Issue will be available online after acceptance and before inclusion in the Special Issue.

Authors who publish open access in Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems are required to pay an article processing charge (APC). The APC price will be determined from the date on which the article is accepted for publication. The current APC for Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems is £2490.00 GBP / $3890.00 USD / €2890.00 EUR. This fee is subject to VAT or local taxes where applicable. Visit the NCA open access support portal and NCA Journal pricing FAQs for further information. Authors can also choose to publish under the subscription publishing model (no APC charges apply); both options will be offered after the paper has been accepted.

Guest Editors: Gerard Velthof (Wageningen University & Research) and Jochen Mayer (Agroscope)

Submission Deadline: 30 March 2026

Background
Agriculture faces significant challenges in increasing or maintaining crop yields while simultaneously reducing environmental emissions. Recycling and use of organic resources in agriculture can significantly increase nutrient use efficiencies on different scales and improve soil quality and carbon balance. Improper management, however, can adversely affect the environment. The use of organic resources from food processing, sewage sludge, and municipal bio-wastes as fertilizers or soil conditioners is expected to rise over the coming decade due to ambitious recycling targets. Safe and sustainable utilization of existing and emerging organic resources is increasingly important, as is the consideration of potential trade-offs or synergies upon their application to soil. Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems welcomes contributions on the management of organic residues and manures in agriculture which were presented at RAMIRAN 2025.

Aims and Scope of this Special Issue
This Special Issue considers original manuscripts of research presented at RAMIRAN 2025 on the management of organic resources and manures in agriculture. Manuscripts should contribute to an improved mechanistic understanding and have significant novelty in order to be included in this special issue. Manuscripts are invited on the following topics:

Agronomic value of manure and organic resources from food processing, waste water treatment, and municipal bio-waste, including new products.Greenhouse gas emissions from the production, storage, and use of organic resources, and the development and scientific underpinning of mitigation strategies.Emissions of ammonia, nitrogen oxides, and other air pollutants from organic resources, including novel measurement techniques.Effects of organic resource use on water quality.Effects of organic resource use on soil quality.Integral studies on the management of organic resources and emissions of different compounds and possible trade-offs at scales from field to continent.Studies on policies and regulations related to the use of organic resources.

Submission Information
Manuscripts reporting results of laboratory, glasshouse, and field experiments, studies on policies and regulations and/or modeling studies on the management of organic residues and manures in agriculture presented at the RAMIRAN 2025 conference will be considered for the Special Issue. Reviews covering important research topics related to RAMIRAN which provide new insights and concepts through innovative data analysis and synthesis will also be considered.

To submit a manuscript for this Special Issue, authors should follow these steps:

Submit your paper through the website https://link.springer.com/journal/10705.In “Collection”, select that the article is part of the Special Issue entitled: “Managing organic resources in agriculture: opportunities and challenges (RAMIRAN 2025)”.
