The GPS Toolbox is a topical collection dedicated to highlighting algorithms and source code utilized by GNSS engineers and scientists. This collection began in 1999 and was created to facilitate the open exchange of GNSS software, accompanied by short explanatory papers and data sets. Complete GPS Toolbox articles consist of a paper, source code, sample data, and a User Manual. Papers are published in GPS Solutions, and the code repository is hosted by the US National Geodetic Survey at http://geodesy.noaa.gov/gps-toolbox (this opens in a new tab).

Submission guidelines:

GPS Toolbox submissions begin by submitting a paper to GPS Solutions as part of the GPS Toolbox topical collection. Once your paper is under review, you will be contacted by the GPS Toolbox editors to arrange transfer of the source code and supporting materials. If your paper and the software package have been accepted, the paper will be forwarded to Springer for publication and the software package will be published to the GPS Toolbox repository at http://geodesy.noaa.gov/gps-toolbox (this opens in a new tab).

The paper must be fewer than 2500 words or about eight pages. These papers are shorter than the typical GPS Solutions research papers; scientific details and large numbers of equations must be separately published in a longer-form research article or as appendices to the software’s User Manual.

As of 2021, GPS Toolbox only accepts source code written in Python, C++, or MATLAB. For the benefit of users, C++ code must be able to be compiled with GNU compilers; Python code must be version 3 or later; MATLAB code must be able to function with just the basic MATLAB package and no additional toolboxes.

The software package must include one or more sample data sets.

The User Manual should describe how to download, install, compile, and run the software.  The User Manual should show how to input the sample data set(s), how to choose options (configuration parameters), and also show exactly what output-files/results the user should expect to get from the input data. Authors are encouraged to put the complete set of equations, algorithms, figures, screen captures, references, etc. into the User Manual rather than the paper.

After submitting your paper to the journal, please send the source code, User Manual, and one or more sample data sets (in a *.zip file) to: ngs.gps.toolbox@noaa.gov (this opens in a new tab). If the package is too large to email, please post it to a file sharing site and provide access for the editors.

Please note that if the paper is rejected, the source code and accompanying materials will not be added to the NOAA repository.

Finally note that the following text will be included at the end of each published paper:

The GPS Toolbox is a topical collection dedicated to highlighting algorithms and source code utilized by GNSS engineers and scientists. If you have a program or software package you would like to share with our readers, please submit a paper to the GPS Toolbox collection or email ngs.gps.toolbox@noaa.gov (this opens in a new tab) for more information. To download source code from this or any GPS Toolbox paper visit our website at http://geodesy.noaa.gov/gps-toolbox (this opens in a new tab).
